Discover Why We're So Fond of Yorkies

Here at The Puppy House, Yorkshire Terriers, also called Yorkies, hold a special place in our hearts. The breed's long, silky coat is beautiful and sheds very little, so Yorkies are often recommended for people with allergies. Although they typically weigh 7 pounds or less, Yorkies have a big-dog attitude that can be feisty and bossy. But it's their sweet nature and the deep bond they form with their family that really win people over. On top of that, they love to cuddle and stay close all the time. They slip right into family life in most homes. Tracking down a reputable Yorkie breeder in the Des Moines, Iowa area can be challenging, since responsible breeders are so rare across the country. That's the reason we take so much pride in offering our carefully bred Yorkshire Terrier puppies to families in Des Moines. We want every family to have access to a healthy, well-raised puppy they can depend on.

Why So Many Families Choose Our Puppies

At The Puppy House, breeding and raising Yorkies the right way is what we do. Our standards go well past the bare minimum. We make sure all of our adult dogs are genetically tested and come from strong bloodlines known for great temperaments. Our dogs are well cared for, with plenty of room to play and socialize.

Every puppy receives Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), which is a series of gentle handling exercises done in the first few weeks of life. Socialization is another important step, and it lays the groundwork for good behavior and habits as they grow. Our puppies spend time in the backyard with kids, adults, and our own vaccinated adult dogs, playing and exploring together. It's a great way to socialize them, and they get plenty of exercise too.

We invite you to stop by and pick out your puppy in person if you can. You'll be able to see our home and our dogs and meet us face to face. We don't take placing our Yorkies lightly, and to us it's more than a one-time sale. We love making new friends and staying in touch as our pups grow up in loving homes.

Every puppy has had their first round of vaccinations and a thorough veterinary exam by the time they go home. You can rest easy knowing you're bringing home a healthy, happy Yorkie who's ready to be part of your family.

How Your Yorkie Puppy Travels to Des Moines, Iowa: Fees and Timing

Home delivery by ground

Des Moines families choose this more often than anything else, and we would suggest it first. A professional transport service drives the puppy door to door in a custom climate controlled van, with an individual carrier, a veterinary check before departure, and updates from the road. Transport leaves Sugarcreek on Tuesdays. Most families across the country have their puppy in hand within about three days of departure. Iowa is on the shorter side of that since the route runs west along the interstate corridor rather than across the country. Des Moines sits 628 miles into that run, and the driver works through , including Altoona IA, Indianola IA, Pleasant Hill IA, Knoxville IA, Carlisle IA, Chariton IA, Monroe IA, Prairie City IA, Pleasantville IA, Corydon IA, Melcher-Dallas IA, Hartford IA, Milo IA, Russell IA, and Allerton IA on the same pass, along with any other Polk County address. Cost is a flat $450 for the state, and no airport trip is involved.

Flight nanny

A trained handler carries the puppy in the cabin of a commercial flight and hands it over at baggage claim, never in cargo. Most of these are same day. From Des Moines, families usually meet the flight at Des Moines International Airport, and Fort Dodge Regional Airport, and because there's no direct route from our corner of Ohio you should plan on a connection. The puppy needs to be at least eight weeks old, under 20 pounds including the carrier, and traveling with a health certificate from a licensed veterinarian. A Yorkshire Terrier clears the weight limit with room to spare at four to seven pounds, so the carrier is comfortable rather than tight. Flight nanny costs more than ground and gets quoted per flight, and weather delays are part of the deal.

Pickup in Sugarcreek

You're welcome to come get the puppy yourself by appointment. Des Moines is 12 to 14 hours out, so this is a full weekend rather than a day trip, but some families want to see where the puppy was raised and go over the records, microchip registration and guarantee in person. If you're making the drive anyway, that's the best version of the handoff.

Travel comes with one breed specific caution. Very young toy puppies can drop their blood sugar after a stressful stretch or a missed meal, so whichever method you pick, plan on small frequent meals for the first few days at home and keep the first evening quiet. Call or text us at (330) 275-4443 and we'll talk through which option makes sense for Des Moines.
